How important is it to work in an environment that is stimulating and dynamic, but at the same time informal and welcoming?
NOS Design considers it fundamental, and that’s why we have made a real “work philosophy”, transforming the public area of the studio into a sort of space of ideas. Emphasizing the location is one of the strengths of the project: the studio is located on the attic floor of a building with a unique perspective on Rome. For this reason, it was conceived to create a glassy, three-sided envelope that looks to the city, creating the feeling of being inside and out at the same time.
The environment, a large open space, has a central soul with a sofa area (intended for customers), and two appendices to the left and right, the first hosting the meeting area and the second two workstations. Sofas, all designed by NOS, as well as the low table, comma-shaped seats, and the chair “S chair”, emphasize the longitudinal spatiality of the environment.
The theme of reuse is always present: it was deliberately chosen to keep the 80’s wooden bookcases, as well as the old parquet, and to reshape the Thonet chairs with lively and informal colors. Even the “Chanel” coffee table in the sofa area, designed and made by artist Sandro Mazzucato, is obtained from the reuse of other items.
The art world is one of the main sources of inspiration for NOS Design: the “Rosa” by Massimo Catalani, a kind of metaphorical crucifix that looks over the whole space, the lighting system of Anna Sergenti, which produces striking effects of light and shadow. Red, a symbol of mental and physical energy, and black, the negation of color, are the perfect synthesis of the dynamism inspired by NOS Design.
Among the objects mentioned, the chair “S chair” is selected in 2014 for the exhibition “The 3rd Tongji Hub Youth Talent Designer Exhibition – Designers’ Proposal for Their Own Life” organized by the Shanghai Design Center.
