  • SOUTH BEACH, A NEW ECO-QUARTER – Downtown of Singapore

    Occupying an entire city block between the Marina Center and the Civic District, the scheme will create a 150,000 square meter eco-quarter in downtown Singapore that continues the Singaporean ideal of the “city in a garden” with its lush planting and sky gardens. The whole complex is sheltered by a continuous canopy, that consists of thousands of horizontal ribbons that create an undulating surface. This has the function to cool down the temperature and increase relative humidity of the tropical climate. The low-rise existing buildings are protected by the canopy, and the obtained micro-climate allows an optimum climatic condition of the tropical vegetation. There are sky gardens on the upper storeys of the 2 towers that also have the function to decrease the relative humidity and act as natural ventilation devices. Architect Benedetta Gargiulo Morelli joined the team, as Foster & Partners were working towards the Written Permission submission to build. She had various responsibilities ranging from architectural design and management of the South Tower core layout design during the Detail Design Phase to coordination with engineering consultants, mainly with the M&E engineer (Parsons Brinckerhoff), civil & structural engineer (Arup Singapore), fire engineers consultants (Ignesis Consultants) and security consultants (STET Homeland security services).
